![]() ![]() Tomorrow, I'm going to start holding up songs from Capacity, Big Thief's second album. It's a brilliant album and for me it stands tall among the great debut albums of history. Big Thief plays together so organically and, well, simply, each part interlocking to the point where I can't imagine there were many overdubs at all on this record, if there were any at all, other than a bit of judicious vocal double-tracking here and thereĪdrianne's songs are still treading this line and always will tread that line between between melancholy and playful, old-fashioned traditionalist and 21st century Brooklyn neo-folk and the band also wavers over the line between retro-folkrock and modern rock and when the band strips back you still hear the unaltered, yet older and wiser, indie-folk Midwestern homeless girl who took Berklee by storm. ![]() The band may not have yet been complete, as James had not joined yet, and yet it feels complete. For one thing Adrianne's voice has certainly achieved some other level of expressionism: I'm not sure how I can describe it: her always pretty voice at times attains an almost unearthly level of imperfect beauty: wavery, struggling to be heard over the growling guitars and thudding drums, ancient, on the verge of off-key or off-pitch, but never quite: like a wailing ghost, it leaves an impression. ![]() This gives the melodies a stronger resonance, somehow, and the interplay between her brutal emotional lead guitar lines and Buck's uncategorizable genius guitar lines is just a match that I never would have dreamed possible listening to the previous EPs that the pair did. It also allows Adrianne to simplify her melodies a bit as the rest of the band fills in the sound that earlier was filled by guitar and voice alone. Adrianne's always-emotional songs are enhanced and elevated by the possibilities a four piece electric rock band offers: the emotion soars on many of these tracks. By letting fate form a band around themselves, Adrianne and Buck were able to greatly expand the scope of their music. ![]()
